Are You the Solution? Or the Problem?

Hey Nonprofit Leader, What’s Keeping You Awake at Night?
This week, I’m straying from my usual nonprofit musings about what keeps nonprofit leaders tossing and turning to what’s likely keeping everyone in Southern California wide awake: the wildfires! (Spoiler alert: It’s not the sound of coyotes or late-night Hollywood parties.)
Nonprofits are the superheroes of unmet community needs. And honestly, what unmet need screams louder than the devastation caused by the fires raging across Los Angeles? Supporting victims and first responders isn’t just a need—it’s an urgent call to action. The immediate crisis is burning (pun intended), but we all know the aftermath will linger for years, even decades.
So, here’s the real question: Are you part of the solution, or are you just doom-scrolling on social media while munching on chips? Because trust me, we’ve got enough misinformation fueling the fire (no, California is NOT rejecting Oregon fire trucks because of emissions—can we please retire that rumor?).
How to Be the Solution (and Sleep Better at Night!)
Let’s talk action. And nobody gets “part of the solution” like the Rotary. Hats off to the Rotary clubs of Coachella Valley, who rolled up their sleeves and organized donations of water, canned goods, blankets, toiletries—you name it. Want to pitch in? Check out their 2025
Wildfire Disaster Relief Fund here.
But wait, there’s more! If you’re ready to put your money where your heart is, here are five verified charities that are actively helping victims and first responders:
California Fire Foundation
Supporting families of fallen firefighters and helping communities rebuild. Donate through their Wildfire & Disaster Relief Fund.
American Red Cross
Providing shelter, food, and emotional support to fire-affected families. Visit their website to donate.
World Central Kitchen
Chef José Andrés is dishing up meals for first responders and displaced families. Help them keep cooking through their donation page.
Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation
Supplying the LAFD with the extra equipment and training they need. Give through their website.
Pasadena Humane Society
Because furry friends need rescuing too! This nonprofit helps animals affected by the fires and reunites them with their humans. Support their work on their donation page.
Be the Solution, Not the Problem
When disaster strikes, Southern Californians rally like nobody else. So, instead of sharing memes or arguing online, let’s step up and make a difference. Donate, volunteer, spread the word. And who knows—if enough of us chip in, maybe Southern California will sleep a little easier tonight (with fewer flames and more dreams).
