Hey Nonprofit Leader, What’s Keeping You Awake at Night?
Last Friday, our local nonprofit universe donned its sequins and sensible shoes for the Desert Cities Chapter’s National Philanthropy Day—the Oscars of the nonprofit sector. Minus the red carpet wardrobe malfunctions, of course.
If you're unfamiliar, National Philanthropy Day (NPD) is the day we roll out the gratitude and spotlight those unsung heroes—philanthropists, volunteers, staff, and organizations—who give with heart and hustle. It's our annual reminder that kindness is not only cool, but powerful.
Let’s break it down:
When? Every November (write it in pen).
Why? To celebrate those making a real difference—through giving, service, and just showing up.
Who’s behind it? The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) made it official back in 1986 thanks to Orange County philanthropist Douglas Freeman and a little help from President Reagan.
What happens? Think awards, applause, and a few happy tears as local chapters across the country honor the people and orgs making communities better.
Meanwhile, in the Coachella Valley...
Our region is one of contrasts: Extreme summer heat, extreme winter wealth and extreme year-round poverty. Sure, we’re known for music festivals, golf, and mid-century modern architecture—but we also have some of the poorest communities in California.
That’s why philanthropy here matters so much. And why the NPD theme—"Change the World with a Giving Heart"—hits home in a big way.
Drumroll for the 2025 Outstanding Honorees:
These aren’t just awardees—they’re community heroes, turning generosity into tangible impact.
Let’s turn our sleepless nights into something good. Here’s to giving hearts, nonprofit hustle, and celebrating the humans who show up and change lives.
Until next time,
💙 Connie
