Hey nonprofit leader, what’s keeping you awake at night?

Navigating the challenges of nonprofit leadership can often be an intricate dance, and one concern that frequently echoes in the minds of executive directors is the composition and growth of their Board of Directors. In a recent meeting with an Executive Director, he expressed the pressing need to expand his Board, which had recently dwindled to just five members. The path forward seemed uncertain, prompting reflection on the strategic steps required to attract committed and qualified individuals.

Expanding your nonprofit's Board of Directors is not just about filling seats; it's a strategic imperative for the success and sustainability of your organization. When seeking board members, the quest often revolves around finding individuals embodying one of the three W's—wisdom, wealth, or work, or ideally, a fusion of all three.

If your priority lies in attracting individuals with financial acumen, commence with your existing donor base. These stakeholders already champion your mission through their financial support and can potentially serve as influential advocates. Initiate meaningful conversations, offer behind-the-scenes glimpses into your organization, and transparently communicate the expectations of board membership, including the give-or-get policy and event sponsorships.

For those prioritizing wisdom, broaden your network within the community. Attend local events, networking functions, and industry conferences to connect with professionals who share a genuine interest in your cause. Engage with local business leaders, professionals, and community activists who may bring valuable insights to your Board.

If your primary focus is on securing individuals willing to contribute time and effort (work), consider tapping into your pool of dedicated volunteers. Existing volunteers are already deeply connected to your mission and can transition seamlessly into board roles, bringing both passion and institutional knowledge.

It's advisable to 'test drive' potential board members by involving them in committees before extending a formal invitation. This phased approach ensures compatibility and commitment, akin to dating before marriage. Active committee involvement often translates into engaged and committed board members.

To facilitate this strategic growth, assess your current board's skill set. Understand their strengths and identify the skills you require for future expansion. I offer a customizable Board Profile worksheet and grid which I am happy to share. These will provide a clear snapshot of your current board's capabilities and aiding in the formulation of a targeted strategy for recruiting new, qualified board members.

May your efforts result in a Board that not only aligns with your organizational needs but also provides a foundation for sound, strategic decision-making. Through this intentional approach, you should sleep more soundly knowing that you are building a Board poised for both immediate and long-term success.
